Dr. GVJA Harshvardhan

Dr. Harshavardhan is the Director, Viral Vaccines, Rotavirus Vaccine Development Project and International Affairs at Bharat Biotech International Limited, Hyderabad.

He studied Veterinary Medicine at University of Bombay and Human Physiology at Michigan State University and Cornell University, USA.

He was at the Pasteur Institute of India, Coonoor from 1964 to 1987 and was In-Charge of the Polio Production Unit that successfully produced for the first time Sabin’s Oral Polio Vaccine in 1969 in India.

He underwent training in DTP vaccine production at the Central Research Institute, Kasauli, and Advanced Training at the Institute of Immunology, Zagreb (Yugoslavia), Human Institute, Budapest (Hungary) and Institute of Sera and Vaccines, Prague (Czechoslavakia) under WHO Fellowship. He was responsible for the establishment of Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis group of vaccines in 1979 at Pasteur Institute of India. He was the Managing Director of Vaccine Institute, Wellington, The Nilgiris, from 1987 to 1998.

Dr. Harshavardhan has over four decades of experience in the production and control of DTP, Rabies, Polio, Rota vaccines in the public and private sector vaccine manufacturers.

He was a Consultant on Vaccines to the World Health Organization (South East Asia Region) during the period 1984 to 1992. He trained several WHO Fellows of this Region in the production and testing of vaccines.

He joined Bharat Biotech International Limited, Hyderabad as its Advisor for Quality Assurance, in 1999. The candidate Oral Rotavirus Vaccine 116E of the Project is now into Phase III Safety and Efficacy Clinical Trials in infants. He represents Bharat Biotech International Limited at various national and international meetings.

Dr. Harshavardhan is the Vice President of the Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network. He is a Member of the Organizing Committee, BioAsia.

He was on the Organizing Committee of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/WHO for the conduct of Workshop on Enhancing Global Workforce for Vaccine Manufacturing at Cape Town, South Africa and the proposed Workshop on Business model for Flu vaccine, Washington, January 2013.

He was a Member of the Strategic Working Group on Immunization of GAVI, Geneva.

He is associated with several national organizations that are related to vaccines.

Dr. Harshavardhan is:

  • Founder Treasurer of the Indian Academy of Vaccinology and Immunology.
  • Founder Full Member of the Association for the Prevention of Rabies in India.
  • Executive Secretary of the Indian Vaccine Manufacturers Association of India.
  • Vice President, Developing Countries Vaccine Manufacturers Network.

He is the author of several papers on development and production of vaccines.
